Rep. Quinn & Sen. McIlhinney sponsor PA House & Senate resolutions for National Healthcare Decisions Week April 16-22

HARRISBURG, PA (25 APRIL 2017)—The Pennsylvania House and Senate approved separate resolutions last week recognizing Healthcare Decisions Week in the Commonwealth, April 16-22, and the importance of advance healthcare planning for all its citizens.

Representative Marguerite Quinn (R-143) and Senator Chuck McIlhinney (R-10) sponsored the two resolutions, which were then presented to Betsy Payn, MSN, and Veronica Coyne, MD, co-founders and executive director and medical director, respectively, for local nonprofit advance care planning resources provider, Looking Ahead Inc.

National Healthcare Decisions Day April 16—and the full week of April 16-22 this year—is a ten-year-old initiative that encourages all adults to plan now for future medical care. By law, every person has the right to choose the type and degree of care he or she wishes near end of life or in critical circumstances where the patient is unable to speak.

“We all want to be involved in making decisions regarding our end-of-life care,” says Rep. Quinn. “Healthcare Decisions Week sheds light on the fact that we CAN and should make these decisions, and the sooner the better.”

“It is critical for all state residents to understand their options and decide now what kind of care they would want in the future if they were unable to speak for themselves,” Sen. McIlhinney says. “Simple steps like completing a living will, choosing a healthcare agent and filing advance directive documents can make a huge difference in ensuring the patient has the final say in how they are treated in an emergency situation.”

“These resolutions position Pennsylvania as a leader in the national movement to recognize advance care planning’s essential role in good health care,” says Ms. Payn. “Representative Quinn has championed our efforts for almost three years, and we’re grateful to have Senator McIlhinney join her in support of this work.”
