McIlhinney Blasts DEP for Issuing Dangerous Mining Permit

HARRISBURG – Sen. Chuck McIlhinney (R-10) issued the following statement today regarding the Department of Environmental Protection's permit approval for expanded mining operations by the New Hope Crushed Stone and Lime Company in Bucks County:

"Mining an additional 50 feet in the NHCS quarry could have serious consequences for the community, including well failures for homeowners and businesses, increased pollution in Primrose Creek and dangerous sinkholes at Solebury School. I am deeply disturbed that DEP has put the health and safety of community residents at risk by turning a blind eye to these concerns.

"I took part in several meetings with Secretary Krancer and other DEP officials to discuss this issue, and a number of reputable community leaders clearly demonstrated the damage inflicted by this operation. The Department's refusal to accept any hard evidence regarding this operation's effect on the community is baffling. DEP's mission is to protect Pennsylvania communities from pollution and protect the health and safety of state residents. In this case, they failed miserably.

"DEP's indifference toward the health and safety of our community is extremely troubling. I will continue to work with members of the community to minimize and mitigate the impact of this operation, and I sincerely hope that Secretary Krancer and DEP will resolve to re-examine this issue and provide members of the community an opportunity to make their voices heard."
