For Immediate Release McIlhinney Applauds Game Commission Ruling Allowing Use of Bait in Red Tag ProgramHARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners approved a measure this week that would allow the limited use of bait to prevent deer from causing crop damage, according to Sen. Chuck McIlhinney (R-10). The decision will benefit farmers who are enrolled in the Agricultural Damage Depredation Program, also known as the Red Tag program. The program allows landowners who suffer crop loss to remove antlerless deer outside of the regular hunting season. Hunters who participate in the Red Tag program will now be permitted to use bait during any legal deer season and the Red Tag seasons for antlerless deer, which runs from February 1 to May 15 and July 1 to September 28. "I applaud the Game Commission for taking action to give farmers another tool to prevent crop loss," said McIlhinney, who supported the regulatory change. "Deer can be extremely destructive to local farms during the growing season. This change will allow farmers to better protect their livelihood."
